As much as I love Neil Young's music, this pono thing just makes me sad.
It's so full of FUD type audiophool nonsense that, as Neil Young would
say, "it hurts my ears". It turns out that at least it is not going to
be some magical new format as initially reported. Instead, they are
going to have a pono store that sells FLAC files in different versions
(16/44.1; 24/48; 24/96; 24/192). So hi-rez FLAC files are nothing new
(already have this, HD Tracks, etc.). They will evidently be overpriced
just like hdtracks. But if more competition makes downloadable lossless
files more mainstream (i.e., "itunes for lossless") then that's not
entirely a bad thing. But a portable player that can play FLAC? Heck,
we already have various versions of that. And I don't even want FLAC on
my portables.

Regarding use of Pono player as a home player. First, it has only analog
out (so can't connect to your DAC). 2nd, it can only play what it can
hold in its internal memory cards (which can be switched in and out).
3rd, it is not a network streaming player (more like an ipod that can
play FLAC), and 4th, one can't synch two or more pono players. Bottom
line: it is an ipod that can play hi-res FLAC files, may or may not have
a really good DAC built in, and that has limited memory. I have no use
for such a player. I have two ipods that I haven't used in several
years now. Away from home, I have a few things on my ipad or iphone,
and what I don't have there, I can use spotify for while travelling.
