LMS can already downsample on the fly for players that cannot handle
higher bit/sample rate files.
The Classic, for example can only cope with 24/48 maximum, and the
server program resamples files on the fly provided that the machine
hosting LMS can handle the processing, which means that the Classic will
play 24/192, even though it cannot throughput it natively.

I wonder if it's possible to rewrite the Touch player's internal code to
hamstring the performance of the device?
You'd need to be capable in the code writing department to do it
yourself, and I can't see any of the developers picking up this
requirement - it's the first time I've seen anyone request it.

The simplest way to deal with the problem is to resample the files using
dbPoweramp or Foobar or the like, and keep a copy of the undoctored
files just in case you change your hardware to something that can handle
24/96
