Do you have some other equipment that you could use to verify that the B&K doesn't work as expected? Perhaps a computer with S/PDIF out?
If it's really the case that it doesn't work as expected, I'd ask the manufacturer. Perhaps it's broken. Perhaps there is another, properly functioning, firmware version.
