I agree - keep the audio in the digital domain as long as possible, and
use existing networking.

I am familiar with baluns in general, in audio they usually consist of
audio transformers. Yes, they can be useful if you have to carry
high-impedance signals for hundreds of meters, but not really applicable
to a domestic environment, where you'd get a better sound quality by
using a normal balanced, differential connection (driven by a balanced
or unbalanced output stage).

But it is a dedicated connection that becomes legacy as soon as HDMI is
replaced by the Next Great Thing. I just run cat5/cat6 everywhere to be
future proof.
