Looks like a fun project. I allow my Touchscreen controllers (o2 jogglers & a Pi) to be players but sync them with what I want to control. Yes they then appear in the list of players but I give them names that make it clear what they are for e.g. Living Room Control. They output to null but being synced players they will display the hacked upgraded VU meter! A control point alone won't display the VU.
Like everyone else I would go CAT5 for this.
