First post here after years of lurking. I reinstated my SBT after years in storage and found the same problem. I first disassembled the remote, then used cotton wool slightly soaked in rubbing alcohol to remove the sticky gunk. After that the surface felt unpleasant to the touch, so I then applied a small amount of baby oil onto a fresh pad of cotton wool, and "polished" the remote with it.
