pcc has the advantage of being written in C. It's nice to have a C toolchain. C++ is not something to base the health of an ecosystem on. I vaguely recall last time I helped bootstrap a toolchain, X11 was one of the more stressful things to build/link. But they already had the kernel building before I started...
