Fetching it back and printing "Warning: -a capped at hard limit %lld" if they don't match might be a better approach? (Could not set to requested value, print warning to stderr.) Again, probably an "ask chet". (Probably tomorrow, still recovering from travel. International flights have gotten a bit less comfortable since pre-pandemic times, which is saying something...)
