I was thinking something closer to wiki markup. I would prefer
something which looks like the message when viewed in plain text (but I
can't really come up with any real justification for doing it that
way). 

Being able to drop the formatted string into a HTML browser and see the
correct output would be kind of useful, there are a bazillion HTML
renders out there. XML is also very clear where as WikiText can be
quite ambiguous (then there is the whole escaping problems).

I think we should make sure we keep "formatting" (IE CSS) out of the
message however. The formatted string describes extra meaning (such as
headings and paragraphs), not exactly how it should be displayed. This
is because you may be viewing it on a computer, or a mobile, or on some
other system. Plus we all know what happened with HTML Mail and similar
:)

What does everyone else think?
