It is better for the project if all communication is kept in public for
everyone to contribute too.

I certainly agree. Both you and David are working on tpserver-cpp and
you are both adapting board games. You WILL run into a number of similar
problems. 

There is also many ideas which Thousand Parsec protocol requires that
all the student will be required to figure out. Talking about it online
will help you all
