integrating the last completed patches, and now isn't the time to add
new APIs, especially not if the implementation hasn't been tested for

Right, #2141 seems to need more work and #6014 only proposes an
(untested) interface, so it this stage of the development, I'd say we
leave things as they are.
We will very happy if you take this up in next-dev-1.1.x, though.
That's a good topic for 1.1dev, and there we might switch to plain
HTML5, use and handle the multiple attribute.
