I had the impression that the 11dev installation instructions were geared toward folks with a solid understanding of the python environment, as well as stuff like the SWIG bindings. (IIRC, the SWIG bindings were one of my big difficulties.) I did not keep a detailed log of my efforts, and admittedly I decided to give up rather than beg the list for a lot of help. The fact that things tend to go in odd un-*nix like places in OS-X is also certainly part of the problem. The 10.4 installation instructions were much more geared to a newbie like me, and that worked no problem. So I decided to wait for an official release of 11 before I switch. Just a comment from the peanut gallery, and in no way a slight on the industrious and incredibly helpful trac community, for whom I feel nothing but gratitude.
