I can agree that I have lots of tables that are now broken... Some are
generated by programs. So I can update those easily. Others are going to
have to be corrected as they are discovered. Still, I like the spans, so
I can live with the required edits.

While on the topic, I am not sure the cell justification is functioning
in b1. For example,

|| center ||

renders the same as

||left ||

Both are left justified. || right|| works as advertised.
