Hello.
I am checking Trac evolution and I am quite impressed by what I see
and how Tracs evolved but something is a bit beyond me and close to a
showstopper.

Tracs seems not to have a "Date" type for fields and custom fields and
no plan to have one.

The consequence, especially in non US countries is that Trac is
borderline unusable in any public facing environment and barely
usable in any moderately sized groups.

There is no way to communicate the expected date format, no way to
check it and of course many plugins tend to expect a particular
format, most often the very odd US one (yes it is odd ;) ).

But the most severe problem is that incorrect dates breaks the using
code at runtime.

As long as you just "fill and list" tickets, you won't even notice
that your dates are wrong, or inconsistent, till you start searching
by date of course, but when you use any computation based on date, in
a plug in or else, there is no way of preventing run-time issues.
And that's not possible to defend in comparison to any other bug
tracking system.

Is there plans to add a date type with a an internal format, maybe a
field validator, and translate from local to internal format when date
are entered through the user interface ?

I have seen only one message about that, so maybe I am the only one
puzzled by that but somehow I doubt it.

I think many people checking trac and encountering that problem end up
discarding Trac for this sole reason.

Because the first time you put a "Gantt" graph on your main page and
it breaks right away for a mistyped date, you know you won't be able
to use Trac peacefully in a moderately sized team or explain that to
your local superficial decision making person ...

The tool is awesome the plug ins are great, I want to push for it, and
be able to extend it in Python is a must :)

But dates ? :)

tell me I am wrong ;)

thanks a lot for your time.
