I am not a JS programmer but I had a conjecture: Do the names of your custom fields contain underscores "_"? In a test, it worked for custfield2 and not for cust_field2 (my field name in the test was different but this should not matter). So I suppose that the plugin has a parsing error.
I myself would prefer to solve such problems with Genshi but then you see the automatic change only in the preview or after submitting. Probably, this is not necessary here - the internal field names are not visible for the user, just try to rename them ...
