I am able to subscribe to the feeds using other RSS viewers. It's
just not working for Thunderbird 1.5 on both on OS X and Windows.

Works for me (using htdigest and Thunderbird 1.5 on linux). Can
you get
firefox's livebookmark (or some other RSS viewer) to work with that
link?
