Actually, I meant it the other way around. I'm fine with using xdg-open as default, as long as we have a sane fallback (be it gnome-open or any other means). This way, we don't have a hard dependency on xdg-utils. Please keep in mind, that we can't know about all the other distros. So I'm very conservative when it comes to add a hard dependency on xdg-utils for the deskbar-applet plugin.
