Found some information on all this. It seems like xdg-open is just a front end for different desktops (namely gnome, kde or xfce (and maybe others))[1]. In regard to gnome-open opening .desktop files as text files with editor, there was a bug report[2,3] which kind of 'got-not-closed'.
