It doesn't matter if you set it from the Nuvi (--RETRIES 6) or if you
set it from otwincfg.exe or if you enter it from a terminal program. For
that matter you could send it an APRS message (cmd RETRIES 6) to
enter or change the setting as long as the sending station is in the
AUTHLIST.

When you send a message, the expectation that you would receive the
ACK... if the other station hears you and if you hear the ACK. An ACK
is an acknowledgement that a message has been received. It's possible
for the other station to receive the message but for you to not hear
the ACK. An ACK is only sent if the original message had a message
identifier. The T2 automatically adds one, so you don't have to worry
about that.
