Keith,

I can't speak for anyone else, but I know my testing showed that the stock
antenna was worse than a dummy load. I know shape doesn't always tell the
story, but I always found it interesting that the antenna shipped with the VHF
777 is almost identical to the UHF antenna shipped with most Motorola UHF
portables. When I swept the Puxing antenna, it wasn't really resonant anywhere.

Having said that, after a quick look at the 777's antenna jack, I realized it
utilized a male SMA on the radio end. This is the exact same scheme used by
higher end Motorola portables. At the time, I was still a Moto tech and had
spare antennas in stock. I grabbed one of our full length VHF antennas and put
it on the 777. The performance of the radio was immediately improved! I was
hearing packets miles away where before I had to go outside to even hear them
faintly.

Moral to my story is, dump the stock antenna and get a Motorola VHF. If the
group is interested, I can find the part number(s) that apply. I know they can
be found on eBay fairly cheap.

Scott - have you ever looked at the SWR on the PX-777? I'm
trying to put

together a group order and one potential buyers asked about the SWR on

the 2M band.
