Never mind.  I was going through the junk box and found a 12DC 400ma wall wart. 
 Plugged it in and the leds blinked.  Connected to the computer and all is 
well.  Although the label indicates 7 to 28 volts the 9 volt wall wart wouldn't 
do the trick.  Sorry for the QRM on the forum
