Hi Group:

What are all of the options for external temperature reading with a T2?
I am going to have my Tracker2 at an AC powered mountain top microwave site as
a digipeater. I would like to run a remote sensor outside the building to read
the outside temperature for the local snowmobile club and interested hams.
What is the best way to do this?

Questions:
What temperature reads with the new command "EXTTEMP" 1-wire or telemetry input
of some sort?

What temp sensors work on the 1-wire port and what temp sensors work on the
telemetry port?

I beleive that telemetry data can not be decoded and viewed on the screen of a
kenwood or yeasu aprs radio or ui-view? You would have to go to a site that
decodes telemetry to view like aprs.fi? 1-wire feed might be more easily viewed
by all if it is displayed directly in the comment line or status text of a
beacon?

Can you have the temperature beacon at the beginning of the comment line and
still start your beacon comment with PHG for Kenwood radios to read your power
height and gain info? Any testing I have done inputs the temp data at the
beginning of the comment line before the comment. Will this mess up the PHG
decoding of packets?

Can 1 wire temp readings be sent out as a status text seperate from your beacon
comment?

What are the tips and tricks to wire in and config these temp sensors?

I have done some reading of past posts and could only find this:
On the software side, how do you activate the sensor this way? with the EXTTEMP
command or by turning on the 1-WIREWX command?

Re: command and telemetry questions

Here is something that works, have done it myself. This was posted by Scott
Miller.

Here's a quick way to add a 1-wire temperature sensor to an OT1m or
OT2m: Just cut about 2 mm off the end of a DS18S20's leads, and insert
it into an RJ11 connector, so that the rounded part of the chip is away
from the tab and (with the tab down) the leads are in the 3rd, 4th, and
5th of the 6 slots, then just crimp it in.

The part you need is sold by Argent, here is the link..

You will need a crimping tool and a RJ12 plug.
