In California we have problems with Smart beacon users that change their default settings. They can unknowingly overload the APRS network.
I checked your stats: http://aprs.fi/?c=raw&call=WD0AFQ&limit=1000 Found over 1000 packets. 33 seconds between packets. WOW! In busy APRS areas this would really effect the network. The default Smart Beacon settings are courteous. When stationary, it will transmit twice an hour. This is enough to keep an object on the maps. Even a TX rate of once every 10 minutes adds up to 144 packets a day if left on 24/7. In busy areas this would be considered spam. Attached is a link to the Smart Beacon Wiki page: http://info.aprs.net/index.php/SmartBeaconing Hope you and others that read this will become aware of the potential to overload your RF network. Recommended SmartBeaconing settings for a vehicle, for normal driving: PARAMETER VALUE UNITS COMMENT Fast Speed 60 mph 3 miles per posit Fast Rate 180 sec 3 miles per posit Slow Speed 5 mph go to low rate at/below 5mph Slow Rate 1800 sec 30 min posit interval while going slow/parked Min Turn Time 15 sec 15 secs dead-time for corner posits Min Turn Angle 30 deg 30 deg per posit at higher speeds Turn Slope 255 unitless requires a turn of more degrees at slower speeds Hope you have a safe, and enjoyable trip. 73's Alan --- In [email protected], "dan" <wd0...@...> wrote: > > I reset it for 600 seconds this morning and left. That should be every 10 minutes. It is running about every 2 minutes now. I will mess with it again later. wE are heading to Quartzsite Monday so I got to get ready to roll. > Thanks for all of the suggestions. > Dan
