I simply monitor my Outbox and if the message doesn't change to a timestamp within a reasonable amount of time, I just delete it on the Nuvi. This seems to happen when sending a message to a station that doesn't have a route back to deliver the ack. (http://aprsisce.wikidot.com/aprs-messaging-explained)
