After much messing about I have identified the culprit: the following
lines (or, I imagine, just one of them) in my .inputrc:

| set completion-ignore-case on
| set completion-prefix-display-length 2
| Control-j: menu-complete
| Control-k: menu-complete-backward
| set show-all-if-ambiguous on
| set show-all-if-unmodified on
| set completion-map-case on
`----

I don’t use bash very often (zsh) so I’ve just commented them out for
now.  Thank you for all your help.
