Pam,
We, as a payor, are using a translator in our implementation and would hate
to think of using a clearinghouse or coding the translation and
interpretation ourselves. I feel with the amount of data needed to reply to
transactions and that may be needed for further analysis of certain cases,
the entire transaction must be accepted by our organization. The
clearinghouses will not store the data needed for future replies. We
actually use clearinghouses to funnel all provider transactions into our
organization, but not for translation.
We accept the ANSI standard transactions, but as in the claim, use our
translator to translate this format to a UB92 or NSF and to move the claims
into our adjudication systems. This allowed no remediation of our claims
adjudication system. The original ANSI standard data is stored for future
use in a "landing zone" database.
We have similar process for the other transactions.
Thank you,
Terry Christensen

We are currently evaluating whether or not a translator would be a
necessary or a good strategic step for our organization. We have 3
hospitals (one 700 bed, other 2 smaller), nursing homes, physician
office practices, and various free standing ambulatory facilities. We
are currently using a clearinghouse for some of the hospital claims
and of course each of the other entities do anything from completely
paperless to totally electronic. There seems to be a wide divergence
of opinion within our organzation and I would really be interested in
what this list has to add to this..Thanks Pam
