Donna, Many of our clients, that are health plans, have made the decision to keep their field lengths equal to the HIPAA maximum length for codes of "D8" and "RD8". When you account for all the possible loops and segment repeat information for the HIPAA transactions, keeping the Date field lengths to the HIPAA maximum, instead of the X12 maximum saves a significant amount of space.
