Since there still isn't any really GREAT transcoding software yet, I would cast my vote for Transcode becoming THAT before it becomes an editor. Note that Transcode's ability to interpolate frames is unique in UNIX transcoding frameworks, as is it's support of proper sharpening filters (msharpen and xsharpen)... Transcode is well placed to run all over mencoder and ffmpeg, but it needs review and cleanup of it's existing features to be able to do it. My own use case, for doing styled subtitles, isn't supported "natively" yet... I have to use '-x mplayer'. But amusingly, mplayer isn't even available as a filter in mencoder or ffmpeg.
