I prefer not to give -x option (IIRC ffmpeg is used then).
In cases to transcode DV I use -x xml for kino's smil lists and
somtimes (mostly $EVIL_OS codecs) -x mplayer is the only solution.
YMMV.

Frankly speaking ... give it a try. I dunno :(. 

AFAIK you can use some external sound editor to change the sound if
in need. IIRC it has to be frame accurate (1/25sec).
Only did this once to get menu sound for a dvd I authored myself and
it both took some time and it is some month/years ago.
