Actually I should have mentioned... I only do my editing on mac. Most of my real work gets done on an Ubuntu Linux box. I've got both to choose from but I prefer to do as much work on Linux because it's a better computer.
I agree, the choice of a MPEG2 camera might not have been very sensible given that I mostly want to edit my family videos. It's somewhat tedious to have to convert everything, but I've made my choice and now it's time to face the consequences. Just use transcode to export to DV (you'll require LibDV, which means
you'll have to recompile transcode and/or MPlayer to make it usable) with PCM audio in an AVI container. Should be good enough for iMovie. Of course, if you purchase/acquire an MPEG-2 unlocker for QuickTime you can import the MPEG-2 clips directly into iMovie and it'll convert them to DV for you.
I did buy the apple MPEG-2 code, it did not make MPEG2 importable into iMovie. I think this feature is restricted to their "pro" video editing products. If I can convert all my MPEG-2 to DV (or something else that iMovie can deal with), I was going to bring them accross from my main computer onto my mac. Any idea what command-line syntax will do the conversion? I will just hack up a python-script or shell-script to automate it for my whole video collection. :-) -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE-----
