PyLucene helps a lot to speed up text searching. The results are an improvement in big projects. I don't expect it to make any improvement elsewhere. Pootle will also use psyco if it is installed, although I'm not convinced that it will provide a big speedup. It might be worth a try, though. > However pyLucene is not packaged for Debian.
