If you did not install Lucene for another reason, then Xapian would be a
better choice.
It should be better maintained for your distribution (there is a
python-xapian package for Intrepid)

At least it's worth trying.

It it fails again with xapian, then you should also try after uninstalling
lucene (or just pylucene), as I don't remember which one is used first by
Pootle.
