For Math developers: ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Thomas Lange <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Date: Jan 9, 2006 5:58 PM Subject: Re: [discuss] Development of Math To: [email protected]
Hi,
What is happening to OpenOffice Math? There are lots and lots of proposals dating years back, but none of them have been implemented yet! When can we expected something new in this department?
Aside from extensions on the framework side like the PDF export as the latest one this is somewhat unlikely to happen. The reason is simply that we lack manpower for all the things we like or need to do. For example my usual areas of responsibility are: - Math - Linguistic - Writer API and - Textconversion (Hangul/Hanja conversion and Chinese translation) And usually there are new features as well to be implemented for new releases and sometimes we have to rewrite existing code. Be it in order to be more flexible, get rid of bugs that can only be solved by changing the design or improve performance and reliability. And usually the focus is on the Writers code because for once it is the application where everyone likes to have new features or improvements to the existing once and for second it is such a large application. Currently we are about 7 people spending their fulltime or most of that only within the Writer code or closely related code. And looking at the number of tasks to be done we could still use a few hands. Thus since Math is considered to be functional (although some things really can/should be improved or even new ones added) and is rather bug free (mainly due to it rather tiny size) basically all the effort goes to the Writer (because of it's naturally way larger user base) or other areas that benefit all applications. Sorry to say this. But this is the state of affairs. But if you are in programming yourself and like to take part in development of OOo Math would be a good starting point. Since because of it's small code base it would be much easier to understand than even most of any carefully selected code-areas within the Writer.
