It's been a while since I've gone down this road, but my
recollection of the ** ATZ ** command is that it restores a user profile of
settings. I believe this may be recalling whatever is stored in user
profile ** 0 ** and ** ATZ1 ** would set the modem up with the profile 1
configuration. V42bis is error correction if memory serves me correct so it
does appear that you are connecting in V.34, just a low speed. Might I
suggest looking in your manual to see if there are registers you can view to
tell you what your transmit and receive levels are. Lossy lines will not
allow you to connect at high speeds.
MOST IMPORTANTLY, you also must be dialing into a digital modem to
reach speeds above 33.6K (I think that's the number). If you are dialing
from analog modem to analog modem, you'll never reach the 50K+ numbers which
you are probably looking for. This is a limitation that I believe has not
yet been overcome.
You can also change the connect message to display the information
you are looking for. Be careful as many modem manufactures default their
settings so the serial port speed is displayed which fools the user into
thinking they are actually connecting at a higher speed.
Take this for what it's worth as it's been 4 years since I've played
around with modems.

I am trying to verify the maximum connect speed of two modems
connected to each other by various media such as two phone company
lines, two extensions off local PBX, and various line simulators.
I am using IBM PC Card modems that come with TP600s (and in one
case a Lucent Winmodem in a 600X).
Using default config ATZ I can never connect higher than 31200
V42bis, as reported by the connection string reported onscreen
in the terminal software. But I think I should be able to connect at
V34 or V90 at higher throughput.
How can I configure the modems to utilize their maximum
capabilities (ATZ should do?), why am I getting these anomalous
results, and is there any logging or diagnostic mechanisms at
hand (either inbuilt in these modems, or in any tools I might
use) to determine why connection speeds are low.
I have various other modems such as external USR Sportster
which I can bring to party if would help in diagnosis.
I am basically trying to study line conditions but have to make
sure the hardware is running at top speed before I can assess the
constraining effect of line conditions.
