Dear TREGers, Joseph Hall asks: "Can anybody advise whether ISDN equipment that meets the euro ISDN requirements in Europe be connected to the US network and work properly. Apart from FCC approval that is!"
I am far from being an ISDN expert. However, I understand that the norm regarding the point of demarcation between customer-supplied equipment and telephone equipment differs. My understanding is that in Europe, the telephone company installs an NT (Network Terminator) which interfaces between the U interface on the subscriber's wire pair and the S interface with which the customer's equipment is expected to work. In the USA, on the other hand, I believe it is not customary for the telephone company to install an NT, and the customer's equipment is expected to connect directly to the U interface. I have also heard that some details of the U interface differ between Europe and the USA. All the above is second-hand information that I have not checked myself. Therefore, you should not take it as correct unless and until it is corroborated by someone who knows for certain. Hopefully, other TREGers will provide confirmation or otherwise. At any rate, we are also interested in the responses and would like to know if our understanding is correct.
