Hello:

The applicable safety standards are UL 1459 (if our design is to appear on the
market before april 1, 2000), UL 1950 (which will supersede UL 1459 for all new
product on April 1, 2000, and will supersede UL 1459 for all existing telecom
equipment by April 1, 2005), FCC part 68, and you will likely need to comply
with Bellcore GR-1089.

If you are interested in meeting the UL 1950 requirements (which will be
required soon), you should consider the T1 line a TNV (telecommunications
Network Voltage) circuit. Knowing this, and considering the layout and type of
circuit on the secondary side of your isolation, you can determine the required
spacing between primary and secondary circuits. Keep in mind you will need to
meet the spacing (creepage & clearance) requirements of UL 1950 inside the
transformer as well.

There have been some good TREG discussions on this topic, which are archived at

Subject: Re: Layout considerations for T1 (for safety, EMC)

I apologize if the subject has been covered recently..

Can anyone summarize the applicable rules and standards
for the part of a circuit that will connect to a T1/E1 line?

My board, almost ready to build, connects to a T1 line directly
using a transformer coupled interface. I've never done T1 before
and don't know for sure what protection, spacing applies. My
connector is an RJ-48.

Examples would be welcome, a consultant would be grudgingly considered.
