Dear Treggers,

With the introduction of the BAPT 223 ZV 5 ("Approval regulation of terminal
equipment to be connected to analog dial-up terminals in the PSTN/ISDN of
Deutsche Bundespost Telekom"), it seems that previous German requirements
relating to series-connected equipment have been dropped, to bring German
technical standards into line with European harmonisation policy. Such
requirements, originally specified in FTZ 1TR2, related to DC series resistance,
insertion loss and interworking between different pieces of equipment.

However, it seems that DIN Standard 44015 ("Requirements for terminals and
configurations for connection to analog dial-up ports of the telephone
network/ISDN of Deutsche Bundespost Telekom") represents an attempt to reinstate
the dropped parameters.

When we design a piece of equipment for a certain market, we aim to meet the
technical requirements for type approval together with any other requirements
that seem to be required due to the particular nature of the local telephone
network and its installed base of subscriber equipment and telephone company
apparatus.

Our questions are:
1. Is DIN 44015 a required standard -- for type approval purposes, or for sale
of equipment to large German corporations such as the Dutsche Bundespost itself?

2. Are the requirements stated in DIN 44015, particularly those relating to
series-connected equipment, recommended for new product designs, for the
products to be a success in the market place?

3. Has BAPT 223 ZV 5 undergone any revisions since edition 1, dated May 1994? If
so, what are the major changes?

Best regards,

David Drori
