Received a number of less than complimentary messages on the topic of
"self-declaration".

In a previous communication I thought we'd done away with that expression and
declared it
an abuse of the Queen's English.

However, the topic of (manufacturers')(suppliers') declaration of conformity is
far from dead.

In Council Decision (93/465/EEC), which describes the different Conformity
Assessment
modules available in the EC, the description of Modules A, C, D, E, F, G and H
has the
following statement in the first clause:

"The manufacturer or his authorized manufacturer established within the
Community must affix the CE marking to each product and draw up a written
declaration of conformity."

The remaining clauses for each of the modules only describe under which
conditions the
supplier may use this particular declaration of conformity. Each of these
modules is based
on a Declaration of Conformity.

If a supplier is caught violating that declaration, they can throw the book at
him to the tune of
some 70 Million ECUs. The test and certification houses will do well, because
no CEO in his
right mind is going to take his employees word for the compliance.

Ciao,
