RE>>Where Brits Sayings are From 12/5/97

Dear Treggers,

My father, who lives in deepest Cornwall has come up against a new word from
the local labour force be they plumbers, gardeners, painters etc.

The word is "Dreckly" as in the phrase "I'll get it done Dreckly".

Apparently it has the same meaning as the Spanish manana , but totally
lacking the former's sense of urgency.

Jerry

          David,

Yes, the 'Q' is short for the words 'thankyou' run together.

The British are reputed to say thank you a lot. A story is often
told that it takes four 'thank you's to buy a 'bus ticket (in the
days when a conductor took the fares once the bus was underway).

Thank you - from the conductor as he approaches,
Thank you - from the passenger proffering her fare
Thank you - from the conductor takes money and gives ticket
Thank you - from passenger accepts ticket.
No other words need be said, although six 'thank you's might be
necessary if the conductor has to give change.

          Thank you,

          Bernie.

PS. We don't say "you're welcome" however.
