I recommend "Understanding Telephone Electronics" by Stephen J. 
Bigelow, published by SAMS Publishing, ISBN 0-672-27350-0.  We use it 
to train new engineers with no telecommunications background.  It is 
easy to read and it's a good starting point.  Good luck.
