Unfortunately, I got trigger-happy with the Delete key and lost Ed Price's
10/2/97 msg on this subject. However, I think I can help.

Back in 1945 a Sidney M. Rubens of the Naval Ordnance Lab in the
Washington Navy Yard published an article entitled " Cube-Surface Coil
for Producing a Uniform Magnetic" in the September, 1945 issue of "The
Review of Scientific Instruments" Vol 16, No. 9. As far as I know Mr.
Rubens has never receive any credit for his advancement. Lately, I have
used the design to create magnetic fields simulating that produced by the
anti-magnetic mine de-gaussing coils in a Navy ship. In my work I called
them "Rubens Coil" in a small effort to properly credit his work.

The Rubens coil is a system of five, equally-spaced, square coils which
provides a uniform magnetic field over a considerable volume. A one
meter cube produces a usable cubic volume 90 cm on a side. I have
used the design from one meter to eight feet. Mapping the interior
confirms the field uniformitly at least to engineering tolerances.

The five coils consist 19, 4, 10, 4, and 19 turns each from end-to-end.
The coils are connected in series and equally spaced. If you desire
additional information please contact me directly.
