Hello Hjalmar,

Regarding your recent message, where you asked:

Yes, you are correct, the HP-8559A is the microwave version of the '8558B.
It was released sometime around 1980, and if I recall correctly was manu-
factured until sometime in the late 1980's. It was the last of this series
of analog, manual spectrum analyzers (there may have been a "B" version, but
I'm not sure about that). I think it will work in any of the 180-series
display frames.

The '8559A frequency display is a voltmeter that read and displayed a
voltage analog of frequency. The analog IF board uses a metalic
strip plated along one edge to provide an adequate grounding connection.
Otherwise, the stepped gains will be slightly higher than they should be
(feedback via the ground, which the edge ground cured).

As to where to get one, I think you will be limited to used equipment
dealers. (Perhaps there are a few on the Web?) If you can get one
that's in good shape, do so! It's not as fancy as modern spectrum
analyzers, but the '8559A was a very good benchtop tool. (As you
might have guessed, I lived with this instrument for several years.)

Good luck!
