1. Yes the config was for those who were having as much trouble as I
did initially using it.
2. Data plans are too expensive for my limited times of use. Cant
compare much. When I surfed GSM Cingular I find the sled quicker by
maybe 50%. But that is an uncertain observation.
3. My college is placing wifi sites around and I placed an old one in
my office. The sled does detect what's out there. However, I'm
uncertain about whether they are active or an old one until I delete
it and re-scan. So it detects well, but is not a detector, unless
you started by deleting everything and then scanned. That would show
all the live nodes.
4 Wifi is only going to grow, since wifi routers are dirt cheap and
competition is what it is. Unless of course competition is what it
is and the data plans try to keep from being replaced by wifi. Bill
Gates speculated about seven years ago that we would have slave
handheld computers that would borrow from whichever nearby massive
unit that was close by. [But what does he know. :) ]
When computers came out we wondered whether TV's would become
computers or computers would become TV's. We are finding that both
are becoming Palm Pilots. Just remember when predicting technology
that they said the the auto would never replace the horse because
people were too attached to their horse. So dont get too attached to
that data plan, or that wifi plan. As you said the "new one" is
coming out (as it will proverbially do.)

question is, can it function as a wifi detector? Or actually, I know
there's an app out there that lets your palm function as a wifi
detector if it has wifi capability. Have you tried that? My thought
is that I'll still be pretty disappointed because wifi signals are
few and far between compared to the ubiquity of mobile signals. True
there are Starbucks and Borders (and McDonalds in some areas), but
that means yet more money per month (or whenever you want to use it),
and of course there are your random cafes with wifi, residences with
unprotected wifi (intentionally or unintentionally), and even a few
areas of muni-wifi, but it still doesn't compare...
