I'm usually skeptical of the merits of further sub-dividing already (relatively) small populations, as it tends to (a) run the risk of dying altogether, and (b) expose members to a subset of information that may not be the best or most complete available. After all, the only downside is "noise," and since both tools and email management techniques are getting better at filtering out marginally relevant posts, I'd rather deal with the noise than risk eliminating good information. But that may just be me.
