I didn't have one of the original Pilots, but I have a vague
recollection of actually buying one and then returning it. This was
back when I was in a lot of credit card debt and probably rethought the
purchase. A little later (before getting a Palm V), I had both an HP
Omnigo and a Sony Magic-something. The Omnigo was kind of interesting.
It was a bit hacky from what I recall. You could customize it by doing
various tricks with files, but otherwise there wasn't much in the way of
commercial apps I don't think. The Sony Magic-whatever was huge!
Probably as big as a Newton give or take. I really liked it, although
it had pretty limited software and expandability. I don't think Sony
wanted to give much control to 3rd party programmers to develop much,
but I could be wrong. I used these for a few months each, but
eventually they went in a desk drawer, and I suppose at some point to
eBay, although I have no specific recollection of selling them. The
Palm V I had for a little while and I think I upgraded to the Palm Vx,
but I don't think I actually used them extensively for more than 6
months before they too went in some drawer. I actually freecycled the
Vx recently since it's battery was dead and I probably would not have
gotten much for it on eBay anyway. I didn't have another PDA until a
friend of mine sold me his Treo 600 for a very cheap price ($100) almost
3 years ago and I've since had the 650 and 700P. Current finances are
such that I probably will use the 700P until it's dead, but of course by
then my situation is likely to change. I've had my current iPod now for
I think around 19 months, which is a record for me since I bought my
first one. When I bought my new computer last December, it was 3.5
years since buying the previous one, also a record, so I'm starting to
get some real practice with stretching technology out! This I'm sure
sounds ridiculous to some of my friends who buy a new computer every 5
years and only buy a new phone if they switch providers, or if their old
phone breaks. But then there are those on the opposite side of the
spectrum who seem to have a new phone every couple of months, and some
(those with GSM providers), who even have a few different phones
simultaneously!
