I was able to find a spot for the dash plate that came with the GPS.
The resulting position is as optimal as it'll get short of finding a
way to mount it below the dash. I had to relocate the radar detector,
though.

There is actually a cubby in the top-center of my dash where a
factory-installed GPS is supposed to go, but was slated for a later
release of the car than the model year that I got. Ricers/racers tend
to put instrument pods there. If I could get a tilt and +slide+ mount,
that would be a perfect place... tilted back and slid back, I can close
the lid to the cubby, but to use it I'd need to pull it forward and
tilt it up.
