You are correct that the 700p behaves this way. My assumption was that
there was some architectural reason for this and that all future Palm
devices would behave this way, so I'm not surprised that the 680 does
it. The 700p is the latest device I have (until the 755p comes out for
Verizon -- be still my credit card!!), so I can't comment on any others
from direct experience.

I have not noticed any problem in Windows XP with the quick disconnect /
reconnect sequence at the start and end of hotsync. I'm surprised that
any version of OSX would have trouble with this -- I'd say that suggests
something is not right in the USB drivers in the OS, or perhaps this is
an installation of newer software on older hardware?

Hey, I thought Macs avoided all that technical jargon like "kernel
panic". Wouldn't they just call it an iError message?

:-)

Cheers,
Don

Subject: [Treo] Different USB behaviour on later Treos causing me kernel
panic problems?

Part of this question will apply to everyone, and the other part
(being Mac-related) won't.

Just started using a 680 and I've noticed that the USB connection
behaves differently to all my previous Palms, including the 650. As
soon as you plug in the USB cable, a USB connection is established (on
both Macs and Windows). Previously, this only happened when you
hotsync. Now, on the 680, when you hotsync the already-existing USB
connection is broken and a new one established immediately. The same
thing happens at the end of the hotsync - the USB connection is broken
and re-established. Anyone else noticed this change? I think that at
least the 700p behaves this way too.

The reason I started looking into this is that I get an intermittent
kernel panic in Macos Tiger either at the very start or end of a
hotsync. The panic log suggests a problem in some Apple USB modules.
It's struck me that it might be brought on by this quick
disconnect/reconnect. Anyone else getting similar problems? I've found
at least 2 others on forums that seem to have it - trying to get some
consensus so I know where to go next! Thanks.
