Nothing like using one data point (anecdote) to tar an entire company, eh? ;-)
Seriously, I have heard horrible stories about every single carrier. I'm
guessing that the difference between them (I have belonged to all but Cingular,
although I had an AT&T account many years ago) is not that great. It ends up
being luck. The same luck that you get when you call a tech rep from most
companies. There are good ones and bad ones. When you get a bad one, try to
speak to their manager. If that doesn't work. Simply hang up and call back
and chances are you will get someone who knows what they are doing. Or, if you
have the time, write a letter to the CEO describing your situation and failure
of their company to provide you with adequate service. That sometimes works
really well - if you can get a phone number to call them (or really their
"office" or assistant), all the better.

All these companies know they have most of us by the balls because they make us
sign 1 or 2 year contracts. We can't just leave them for someone else without
incurring a significant financial penalty, and that penalty is just more money
in THEIR pocket. I think contracts are just about the worst thing, but they
also provide a nice subsidy discount. Best thing to do, then, is to let your
contract lapse and buy new phones at their retail price. Then you can switch
carriers if you have to, but then of course you are usually forced to sign a
new contract. Other than the pay as you go plans, which I don't believe let
you do data, do any of the carriers let you join and not sign a contract???

I posted a more extensive version of my experience with Sprint yesterday here:
