Well, I seem to be back to rather fast backups again, now that I installed the 
SanDisk Ultra 2gb. Backups that took about 20 minutes with the 2gb Lexar now 
are back to taking 2 minutes with the SanDisk Ultra 2gb. Given that the Lexar 
was rated as fast (60x), I wonder if it was just defective.
