The most important thing you can do to improve you Treo experiance is get Push email. It will save time and your inbox will always be the same whether you choose to use your Treo, desktop or webmail.
There are 2 email "protocols" that allow for Push: IMAP and Exchange. Exchange will cost $7 a month but you can use Versamail very effectively. IMAP service can be had for as little as a one time $15 setup fee from Fastmail. However for true Push IMAP on the Treo your only option is Chattermail. Though they have "borged" into Palm the forums are very alive and customer service responds within hours. Chattermail is one time $40. The draw back to the Chattermail IMAP option is that you will likel need an extended battery.
